Emmy-nominated actress Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure) is set to produce and potentially star in a new version of the 1996 film “Set It Off” at New Line Cinema. She will be taking on the project along with her Issa Rae Productions partner Montrel McKay. Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster are the scriptwriters.

The film earned $41 million and was a box office hit which garnered positive reviews from critics. This film was legendary for its time as a film featuring Black female leads during a time in the industry when Black actresses were rarely afforded the opportunity. While in the film the characters each experience tragic scenarios, in the real world, this film helped launch careers!
No other details about the project or is development are available at this time. But, we are excited and on edge to see what direction Issa Rae and her partners decide to take with this film!
Best known as the writer, creators and star of HBO’s Insecure, Rae also executive produces A Black Lady Sketch Show for the network. On the big screen, she most recently starred in Universal’s charming fairy tale Little, and she’ll soon be seen opposite Lakeith Stanfield in The Photograph from the very same studio. She also stars opposite Kumail Nanjiani in The Lovebirds, which Paramount will release next year.
