Are you a fan of The Wood, Brooklyn, The Coldest Winter Ever, Love and Basketball, HBCUs, The Best Man or Being Mary Jane?

If the answer is no, perhaps you’re more familiar with The Pursuit of Happiness, Remember The Titans or the Rocky series

While these titles are not necessarily related, they all possess similar elements of the memoir and autobiography, Dreams Bigger Than Texas: The story of Rahkal C.D. Shelton.

Currently living in Atlanta and working at CNN, this Chicago native’s story is a modern day, coming of age, rose from concrete story of finding purpose and defying odds; infused with hope, comedy and inspiration.

In Rahkal’s words,

“Dreams Bigger Than Texas: A Story of Purpose, Persistence and Growth into Womanhood is an incredible autobiographical story of a young woman coming of age, overcoming adversities, her strive towards success, faith, purpose and growth into womanhood. It’s revealing, relatable, flat out juicy and inspiring…

Inspired by the writing style of Terry McMillian, Rahkal describes her writing as “raw, edgy and relatable”  Trust us, this story will not be a boring read!

In order to properly display the different facets of the characters life within the book, she often includes slang and street dialect that reflects where the character was at that point in her life.  Throughout this book, the reader is taken on a journey of transformation and growth as she later finds herself coming of age, growing in confidence and choosing to re-write her own story.  We won’t give too much more of the story away, but her book cover alone will give you a clue of how challenging her story began compared to where she ends up.  This story is book is infused with inspiration!  If you are in a tough place now, or maybe you have been for a while… this book will encourage you to never give up and to remember that beauty can come out of dark places.

“You can rewrite your story. You may not have been dealt a good hand in life, but you don’t have to finish how you start.  There’s always an opportunity to start fresh!” – Rahkal Shelton
